NEW ZEALAND

Capital city: Wellington

Population: about 4 million (88% European, 12% Maori and Polynesian)
Languages: English and Maori

New Zealand is a country of remarkable beauty. It's snowy mountains, streaming rivers, deep-clear lakes, long beaches and native flora harmonize well. There are also abundant forest national parks and reserves, and a variety of protected endemic fauna.

New Zealand's climate is marine, which means the weather is altering with surprising quickness and amplitude. In general outline summer (January - March) is hot and sunny, +22-+32C; winter (June - September) is warm, but stormy, with snow in the mountains, +10-+15C; spring and autumn are windy and rainy, +15-+22C.

The flight from Los Angeles to Auckland takes about 14 hours.

AUCKLAND

1 - North Island, NZ; 2 - Auckland city; 3 - Tasman Sea; 4 - Pacific Ocean

In 1840 William Hobson, Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand, chose Auckland as the capital of the new colony, named for his naval commander George Eden, Lord Auckland. The city retained this distinction until 1865, when Wellington took over as capital.
Nowadays Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and largest port. It occupies a narrow isthmus of North Island between two harbours, the Waitemata to the East and the Manukau to the West.

Auckland's architecture combines the skyscrapers in the centre and a lot of small cosy houses around.
